Lord Justice Gross, Court of Appeal, will be the keynote speaker for this year's conference. Lord Justice Gross presided the Court of Appeal that handed down the long-awaited judgment in the case of Pabon [2018] EWCA Crim 420 – the LIBOR appeal. This judgment highlighted the misconduct of an expert witness who, in the words of Lord Justice Gross, “failed to comply with their basic duties as an expert.”

About the speakers

Lord Justice Gross

Lord Justice Gross was appointed to the Court of Appeal in 2010 and was appointed Deputy Senior Presiding Judge for England and Wales in October 2011, thereafter becoming Senior Presiding Judge for England and Wales from January 2013 to December 2015. Lord Justice Gross has undertaken various  judicial visits abroad  since 2003. He was appointed Lead Judge for International Relations in January 2018.

Lord Woolf

Lord Woolf was appointed to the Queen’s Bench Division of the High Court of Justice in 1979, as Lord Justice of Appeal in 1986 and a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary in 1992. Between 1996 and 2000 Lord Woolf held the position of Master of the Rolls and in 2000 was appointed Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales a position from which he retired in September 2005. The Lord Chancellor instructed Lord Woolf to review the rules and procedure of the civil courts in England and Wales who went on to write the seminal report, Access to Justice, and then the CPRs.
