Major Crime Investigative Support (MCIS)
MCIS provide support to major crime investigations and vulnerable witnesses and victims nationally.
- National SIO Advisers lead deployable assets and advise on:
- Policy, strategies, tactics, good practice and peer support, and have access to:
- Specialists in Family Liaison, Behavioural Investigative Advice, Geographic Profiling, Interviewing (suspects & vulnerable victims/witnesses), Suspicious Missing Persons, Forensic Clinical Psychology, Search, Forensics & Digital Media. - Forensic Medical Advice Team (FMAT) is a unique resource providing forensic medical support including the sourcing and facilitation of independent medical experts
- Crime Team manage the Expert Advisers Database (EAD) and provide initial investigative support.
Forensic Medical Advice Team
One of the main services provided by the team is the national gateway for independent medical experts who can provide advisory reports or evidential opinions for criminal courts, family courts, and coronial proceedings.
The team provide a level of support for the experts listed with them, including the monitoring of workloads, and retaining current CVs and terms and conditions (fees and timescales). Additionally, the team make sure that the experts are aware of their legal obligations and requirements as an expert witness ensuring that they use the latest legal declarations for their reports, signposting them to the current legislative guidance on disclosure and unused material as well as suggesting support through their experienced peers.
The team have a wealth of knowledge and experience facilitating medical expert instructions, which can entail identifying the most appropriate expert based on the needs of the investigation, sourcing the relevant expert, advising on the expert’s requirements, setting up terms of agreements with clear question sets (using examples from previous enquiries), and arranging scoping and briefing meetings with the expert and investigation team prior to formal instruction.
MCIS Crime Team
The Crime Team consists of experienced investigators who provide written and verbal advice, investigative suggestions and who also manage the Experts Advisers Database (EAD), which is used to identify a relevant expert or adviser who can add value to an investigation.
The EAD covers a broad range of specialists and expertise, for example, Forensic Accountants, Forensic Artists, CCTV & Audio Enhancement, Vehicle Identification, Forensic Linguists, Psychiatrists and Psychologists, Facial Reconstruction, GPS, Marine Investigation, Animal Pathology and Behaviour, Dog Bites, and the Use of Force.
The Core Business of MCIS is:

- Suspicious Missing Persons
- Rapes/Abductions
- Serious and Serial Sexual Offences
- Declared Critical Incidents
Both teams are currently seeking experts for criminal casework particularly in the fields of:
Neurosurgery, Neurology, Urology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry (Neuro & Child), Psychology (Neuro & Child), Sleep Medicine, Optometry, Gait Analysis, Voice Analysis, and Gambling & Gaming.
